HO CHI MINH CITY: Police have arrested an anti-smuggling officer at the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department for investigation into allegations of taking bribes.
Nguyen Tuong Duy, 47, who works at the Customs Control Unit, was arrested at his home in HCMC on December 30, Hoang Viet Cuong, deputy head of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, told Thanh Nien by phone on Saturday.
During the house search, the police found dozens of envelopes with cash worth nearly VND1 billion (US$44,500) in total, a source from the city’s customs department said.
Duy is now under investigation for abuse of power charges, said Cuong.
Investigators of the Ministry of Public Security reportedly received accusations that Duy regularly demanded export and import companies to bribe him between VND2 million ($89) and VND15 million ($668) for every container or shipment in exchange for the smooth clearance of goods.
The Customs Control Unit where Duy works is in charge of smuggling prevention.
