CHICAGO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Chicago O’Hare International Airport seized more than 30 pounds of Opium powder discovered in a passengers luggage. The 52-year-old U.S. citizen arrived on a flight from Tokyo and was selected for examination.
During the baggage inspection, CBP officers discovered 212 packets of a brown powdery substance concealed in plastic bags containing dried leaves. The packets of the brown powder tested positive for opium.
“I take great pride in knowing that we have a highly dedicated and committed group of CBP officers disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics into our country,” said Matthew Davies, Chicago Area Port Director. “These concealment methods vary and can be extremely difficult to detect but CBP officers are well trained, experienced and highly motivated in detecting this contraband.”
The passenger and opium were turned over to the Des Plaines Police Department for prosecution.
