WASHINGTON: Inflation rate in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) witnessed a 0.2 percent rise at the end of September, compared to August 2015, a statement released by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) in Dakar on Friday suggested. The inflation rate stood year on year at 1.4 percent by the end of September 2015, against 1.2 percent at the end of August 2015.
This boost in the inflation is attributable to foodstuff component, whose contribution increased from 0.9 percent at the end of August 2015 to 1.2 percent at the end of September 2015, due mainly to higher prices of fisheries products in the BCEAO statement indicated.
The evolution of prices of these products was affected by the negative impact of the heavy rains, compounded by a general swell that seriously hindered fishing activities in the country. BCEAO also noted a rise in vegetable and tuber prices in most countries, coinciding with poor market supply, especially in Burkina Faso, Mali and Togo.
