MANAMA: Customs officers in Saudi Arabia have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16,984 bottles of liquor (Vodka).
The liquor was hidden in a consignment of mango and pomegranate coming from Bahrain, the neighbouring island country and transiting through Saudi Arabia.
“A truck carrying fruit and heading to another neighbouring country was going through the routine procedures at the border when the customs officer suspected something was wrong,” the Director General of customs informed.
“A thorough search of the truck revealed the existence of the liquor bottles concealed in the load,” he added.
Traffickers and smugglers are constantly attempting to find new ways to beat the system and smuggle in banned products into the kingdom, he further said.
