TAIPEI: Taiwan welcomed nearly 10 million foreign nationals into the country last year and generated a record high revenue of NT$437 billion (US$13.5 billion), the Tourism Bureau said.
A record 9.9 million foreigners visited Taiwan last year, marking a 24 percent annual increase and the largest-ever annual tourism growth for the country, the bureau said.
Compared with other countries, Taiwan was also doing well, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a United Nations agency that promotes responsible tourism.
Its data shows that tourism growth in Taiwan during the first 10 months of 2014 reached 24.68 percent, outdoing 4.8 percent worldwide and 6.8 percent in the Asia-Pacific region.
Tourism Bureau Director-General David Hsieh said the bureau’s priority this year is to ensure travel quality and promote sustainable tourism as it prepares to accommodate over 10 million foreign arrivals this year.
