NEW YORK: Researchers have developed a “smart glass” that can be used in the smartphone displays for a significantly longer battery life.
One of the deciding factors in smartphone choices is the battery life. Sadly, almost all smartphones need to be charged almost every night in order for them to last the next day.
Handset displays have significantly improved compared to the last several decades. From the Nokia 3310’s non-coloured graphic LCD screen to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’s curved Super AMOLED QHD screen, the progress certainly has seen a huge leap.
However, all the improved color and brightness seem to have shrunk the battery life of handsets. Since they show more, they also drain more power. The current displays on smartphones today drain about 90 percent of the battery.
Besides the screen, smartphones today also have more power-draining features. Some have dual-SIM capabilities, which often means that the cell signal radio drains twice as much compared to phones with single-SIM slots.
Smartphones today also have cellular data and Wi-Fi. Downloading and uploading data from remote servers for exchanging emails, playing videos, sending files take a much larger toll on the battery compared to just sending and receiving texts and calls.
The hardware aspect has also improved. Since the handsets today can now play games, music, and videos, the parts under the hood also drain more power compared to older phones.
Today’s generation loves to fiddle with their smartphones. In combination with the processor and GPU, the screen can drain the battery by two-digit percentages in just minutes.
