KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has restrained the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from taking any coercive action against Sui Southern Gas Company over the latter’s failure to pay municipal utility charges and tax of Rs 151 million.
A division bench headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar issued notice to the Tax Department to submit its response to the petition until November 15.
The company had challenged the KMC’s recovery notice in the court. The petitioner’s counsel submitted that the KMC had issued notice on October 14 this year, asking it to pay Rs 151 million outstanding amount from January, 2009 to date within seven days.
He argued that the KMC had not authority to charge such a huge amount in the name of municipal utility charges. He, therefore, pleaded the court to declare as illegal the recovery notice issued by the KMC and restrain it from taking action against the utility.
