KARACHI: Rice Export Association of Pakistan Chairman Rafiq Salman has said that the Karachi Port Authority has been charging Rs 1500 per container as demurrage on rice consignments which is unfair as others were charging Rs 150 for the same work.
Talking exclusively to Customs Today, he said that traders were moving their businesses to other countries as they are paying Rs 200 million every year as demurrage. He said that rice traders could not opt for other agents for this work as there is always fear of theft from outside, even it cost less.
He demanded the port authorities to lessen the charges to promote rice export and to help rice industry flourish.
