BEIJING: Prime Minister Imran Khan met on Friday International Monetary Fund Director Christine Lagarde on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum..
The Prime Minister was assisted by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Advisor on Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Advisor on Commerce, Abdul Razzak Dawood.
The meeting reviewed the relationship between Pakistan and the Fund. Prime Minister Imran Khan identified the areas of reform and initiatives being undertaken by the government to stabilize the economy, control inflation and achieve fiscal balance.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of the Fund programme and to work towards an agreement for which an IMF is coming to Islamabad.
After the meeting, the IMF director, in a tweet, said that she was glad to meet the Pakistani premier in a meeting where a comprehensive policy package was discussed to alleviate Pakistan’s economy.
“I was glad to meet Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan today in Beijing. We discussed prospects for a comprehensive policy package and international financial support to help stabilize the economy of Pakistan, and also the need to strengthen governance and protect the poor.”
