PESHAWAR: Despite lacking of technology and well trained man power, Pakistan Customs Anti-Smuggling Peshawar Deputy Collector Ubaid Ullah vowed to eliminate the menace of smuggling in the region.
DC took over the office almost five month ago and during this duration customs seized items worth Rs 1310, while it was Rs 1106 million during last year
Talking to Custom Today, DC Ubaid Ullah said that department will struggle to double up the revenues in up-coming months of current fiscal year
During this year custom police recovered 5,000 kg narcotics, non-custom paid vehicles, black tea, cloths, tyres and other goods worth of 1310 million rupees.
“We are trying to reorganize the work force to make it efficient, while a special squad will be soon established to curb the smuggling. The level of coordination with agencies and other law enforcement departments will be enhanced,” he added.
Meetings were being held with other sister agencies to make the region smuggling free zone, he said. The infrastructure of the department was also being developed overtime, he said.
Custom police have lack of latest tools and manpower that was affecting the performance of the department as not a single person was recruited for last 25 years. On the other hand, customs police have only five patrolling mobiles since 1978.
He revealed that custom police could not conduct operation or seized smuggled goods on motorway and nearby Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), however in this regard we have started to meet with concern authorities to enhance the power of custom police to end smuggling.
Mr. Ubaid Ullah further said that a system would be introduced of reward for informers. He vowed that corrupt officers will not be bear in department.
