ISLAMABAD: Strong anti smuggling measures have been taken by the Customs. Twelve people have been arrested during the last three days who tried to smuggle petrol worth Rs. 638.51 million.
The main reasons of the phenomena of smuggling of petroleum products particularly at Pak-Iran border is the cheaper availability of smuggled oil, porous Pak-Iran border and use of infrequent routes by smugglers in Balochistan.
Six people out of 12 have been convicted. The arrested people belonged to Gwadar, Lasbella, Hyderabad, Karachi, Kohat and Tando Allahyar.
Pakistan Customs is in close collaboration with Frontiers Corps (KPK) to carry out anti-smuggling within 20 km of the international borders vide SRO 1090(I)/2010 dated 01-12-2010.
Anti smuggling powers had also been given to Pakistan Coast Guards and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency vide two simultaneous SROs No. 42(I)/2014 and SRO No. 43(I)/2014 dated 20-01-2014 to check the smuggling on high sea.
