Origin Energy says the first shipment from its $25 billion Australia Pacific LNG joint venture left Curtis Island over the weekend. Origin (ORG) boss Grant King labelled the news a “landmark moment” for the seven-year project.
“Origin is delighted that the first LNG cargo has departed from Australia Pacific LNG, carrying natural gas for delivery to Asia,” he said.
“These are incredibly large, complex projects and exporting the first cargo is a tremendous achievement for the Origin team that led delivery of the upstream operations, and the ConocoPhillips team that led delivery of the downstream operations.”
Australia Pacific LNG is one of three LNG plants on the east coast of Australia to become operational over the past year. The news comes after production began at the plant on December 11.
Australia Pacific LNG produces natural gas from the Surat and Bowen basins in Queensland, then pipes it to its LNG facility on Curtis Island where it is converted to LNG for export. The project is a joint venture between Origin, ConocoPhillips and Sinopec.
