WELLINGTON: Antony de Malmanche had arrested in December after he was allegedly caught trying to smuggle 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine into Bali.
The trial of the New Zealand man accused of smuggling drugs into Bali has been adjourned due to further problems with finding a translator. If found guilty he could face the death penalty. His trial began yesterday but has been adjourned because the accused’s lawyer says a satisfactory translator hasn’t been provided for the 52-year-old. “It’s a legal requirement that they provide a licensed translator,” says Craig Tuck. “That hasn’t happened so the trial is continuing with an interpreter.”
Mr Tuck, who has brought two experts with him to attend the trial, says they have made their objection to this known to the court. De Malmanche’s trial has already been delayed twice due to problems finding a suitable translator. He is due back in court next week.
