SAINT HELIER: A New Jersey man who conspired to smuggle contraband into a federal pretrial detention facility has been sentenced to 53 months in prison.
Federal prosecutors say Muhammad Subpunallah will also have to serve three years of supervised release under the sentence imposed Tuesday. The 34-year-old Orange man had pleaded guilty in March to a complaint charging him with conspiracy and an indictment charging him with a weapons offense.
Subpunallah was arrested on the weapons charge in October 2011, and was held at the Essex County jail.
From September 2013 to February 2014, he directed a relative to deliver the contraband to a lawyer who smuggled it into the jail in exchange for cash.
Subpunallah sent inmates to the attorney visitor room to meet with the lawyer and retrieve the contraband.
