CALIFORNIA: The NeNevada City Chamber of Commerce its goal of paying council member Duane Strawser back for a more than $15,000 debt he took on in his efforts to bring the 2015 Amgen Tour of California cycling race to Nevada City.
The chamber has already raised around $14,000, most of which came from donations made prior to the Aug. 3 launch of an online Go Fund Me campaign.According to chamber director Cathy Whittlesey, the group has raised just north of $3,000 in more than three days
In addition to paying off the debt, the online campaign also aims to raise money to fund future Amgen bids. The week long race has been held in May for the past 10 years, and runs through eight stages from Northern California to the Los Angeles-Pasadena area.
This year, Strawser had to drop certain product categories, such as beer, due to Amgen’s priority contracts with other national brands, leaving a deficit of $15,300 that Strawser and his family paid back on their own.
