MULTAN: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) seized huge quantity of imported cigarettes worth Rs2.3 million from Dera Ghazi Khan region.
Sources told Customs Today that Customs I&I team received credible information that huge quantity of foreign origin smuggled goods would be transported from Quetta to Multan via Dera Ghazi Khan Region. Director Customs Intelligence and Investigation Usman Bajwa has formed the special team to thwart their attempt. He constituted anti-smuggling squad comprising Superintendent Mubeeen Akhtar, Superintendent Muhammad Saleem.
Customs Intelligence team took special measures for recovery of non-duty paid cigarettes by taking effective measure to curb smuggling in the region and started patrolling in the Sadiqabad region by tightening monitoring of the movement of goods to intercept smuggled goods. Field Intelligence Unit of Dera Ghazi Khan has intercepted suspected truck loaded with imported goods due to their authentic information from the informer.
During examination of the Customs Intelligence staff, they recovered huge quantity of foreign origin cigarettes including different brands of Dunhill, Benson, Marlboro and others. Customs Intelligence teams recovered almost 145 different cartons of smuggled Cigarettes and Cigars during their examination.
Customs Intelligence asked the drivers of the trucks to produce legal documents of recovered cigarettes and cigars but they failed to produce any import documents to justify their legal possession. Customs Intelligence teams seized recovered Cigarettes and Cigars by framing a seizure report under Customs act 1969.The value of seized Cigarettes and Cigars were almost Rs5 million. Further Investigations were still under process.
