SANTO DOMINGO: Delegates from over 100 countries analyze today new security measures at the World Customs Organization (WCO) Summit in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The meeting of the WCO General Policy Commission, which is on its 2nd day on Thursday, was inaugurated by council Secretary General Kunio Mikuiya and the chairman of the Customs Cooperation Council Zouhair Chorfi.
The Dominican Republic’s Customs Authority said the objective of the meeting was to discuss the mechanisms to strengthen customs activities in order to avoid possible threats to world security.
Abinader Fortunato, a spokesman for the Dominican customs office, added that participants will also discuss the design of strategies that allow identifying the transport off substances that pose a security threat.
The three-day meeting in Punta Cana will focus, among other issues, on updating and implementing policies that facilitate global trade as well as exchange of information between customs authorities on piracy, counterfeiting and dangerous products.
It will be held until Wednesday and will be attended by 104 delegates from 32 countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean.
