MEXICO CITY: The latest statistics released by the Mexican Tariff Information System (Siavi) indicates that the country’s steel imports grew considerably by nearly 20% in 2015. The largest exporter of steel to Mexico during the year was the US. The steel imports from the US totaled 4.767 million tonnes, accounting for 40% of the total imports by the country during the entire year. The shipments from the US have increased by 4.9% over the previous year. The US had shipped 4.543 million tonnes during 2014.
Japan continued to remain as the second largest steel exporting nation to Mexico. The imports from Japan totaled 1.384 million tonnes, 10.7% higher when matched with the imports of 1.250 million tonnes during 2014. In third place was South Korea with 1.299 million tonnes. The imports from South Korea skyrocketed by 70.8% when matched with 760,321 tonnes imported during 2014. The other top steel exporters to Mexico during 2015 were China (883,941 tonnes, up 53%), Brazil (757,851 tonnes, up 248.2%), Canada (526,379 tonnes, up 1.5%), Russia (520,311 tonnes, up 29.8%) and Taiwan (235,324 tonnes, up 37.8%).
The highest year-on-year increase in steel imports was from Brazil. The imports from Brazil surged higher by 248.2% from 217,639 tonnes in 2014 to 757,851 tonnes. On the other hand, imports from Germany declined sharply by over 14% from 236,078 tonnes in 2014 to 202,156 tonnes in 2015.
