CHENNAI: Mercedes Benz India is intending to triple its sale to 200,000 units by 2020.
The German luxe marque has internally set that as a target for the fast growing Indian market and the company has stepped on the gas with as many as nine launches so far this calendar year with the GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC SUV being the latest. Top Mercedes Benz India officials say the growth so far has been good enough for the company to do much better than its parent’s targets.
The target is based on an assumption that the overall vehicle market in India will touch 5 million units in the next six or seven years with “luxury segment comprising around 4 per cent of that pie, up from 1.2-1.5 per cent currently,” said Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India. If it pans out, then the luxury segment, currently pegged at around 35,000-40,000 units a year, will jump five fold to hit 200,000 units making the game that much more attractive for the big three German marques in the business – Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW.
