MALÉ: Maldives Customs Service cautioned the public to beware of increasing reports of smugglers attempting to sneak in illegal substances within containers sealed at factory standards.
According to a statement released by Customs, there are attempts to smuggle illegal substances in factory sealed containers, electronics, medicine bottles and canned food tins.
The statement did not clarify the exact nature of the illegal substances.
Customs advised Maldivians returning home from abroad to thoroughly check any items left in their care by anyone.
They also warned that the person carrying the illegal substance will be held responsible for the smuggling should such an incident occur.
Customs has detained several people on numerous occasions for carrying drugs hidden in items left in their care by other people. Some of the individuals detained were elderly people.
