KUALA LUMPUR: The Customs Department is targeting registrations of more than 20,000 businesses for goods and services tax (GST) in Ops Jejak GST 2016, which started today, lasting until Friday.
Customs director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said the operation was aimed at tracking merchants who were eligible to register for GST but had yet to do so.
“The operation will be carried out in an educational approach, more towards persuasion, he said at the launch at Kelana Jaya Customs Complex, Petaling Jaya, today.
He said, at the same time, the department would also ensure that traders who were already registered for GST operated their businesses according to the law.
Khazali said a RM5,000 compound would be issued to traders who did not comply with GST rules.
“However, we will not accept cash payments at the business premises because offenders will need to make payment at the nearest Customs office counter,” he said.
He also stressed that the operation would be carried out by Customs officers in uniform, to prevent any imposters trying to take advantage.
