KUALA TERENGGANU: State Customs Department enforcement officers seized 115 boxes of smuggled cigarettes worth RM828,920 after a 45-minute chase with a lorry which was initially spotted near the Gemuruh Plaza Toll here, on Tuesday.
State Customs Department director Datuk Hamzah Sundang said however, a team of officers from the department managed to block the lorry near the Kuala Terengganu police station at about 7.30pm.
He said the lorry was heading towards Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur. The driver and his wife, both locals aged in their 30’s were detained to assist investigations. “The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling of cigarettes and not possessing a valid document,” he said at his office today.
The items and the lorry were seized later by officers. Both suspects are being remanded at the Kuala Terengganu police station for six days to assist investigations. He said those with information about smuggling activities should call the department at 09-6225674.
