DUBLIN: Gardai have seized heroin and cocaine with a street value of €3m, along with a number of firearms.
The seizure was made in Tallaght last night when gardai intercepted a vehicle at Greenhills Road.
On searching the vehicle, heroin and cocaine with an estimated street value of up to €3 million along with four firearms and ammunition were seized.
The recovered firearms include an AK 47 assault rifle and ammunition, two .22 rifles and ammunition, and a loaded pump action shotgun along with silencers and telescope sights.
The drugs were concealed in 23 blocks.
Two men – aged 41 and 34 – have been arrested and are currently detained at Tallaght Garda Station.
It is believed the two men arrested are not well known to gardai.
However, the seizure has been linked to a very well known drugs gang based in Ballyfermot, led by a man in his 40s with no convictions but known to gardai.
The seizure was carried out as part of a carefully planned operation with adequate resources to ensure the drugs and weapons were isolated quickly and safely, according to sources.
“Being caught with that much drugs and weapons carries a very long prison term if convicted, and gardai could expect many criminals to put up a fight when approached by gardai,” the source added.
“Learning that some of the guns were loaded and ready for use shows how dangerous the situation could have been but thankfully the arrests were made and a massive quantity of drugs was taken off the streets,” they explained.
Gardai are confident that the seizure will deal a massive blow to the drug supply chain of a Dublin crime gang.
