DUBLIN: Revenue officers have seized contraband cigarettes and tobacco worth around €10,700 in Co Tipperary.
The find was made after Revenue officers stopped a car in Golden here the other day and searched the vehicle.
They discovered a quantity of illicit cigarettes and in a follow-up search, under warrant, of the driver’s residence, they uncovered more cigarettes and tobacco.
22,800 cigarettes – branded Royal Classic, Jim, MG, NZ Gold, Che, Marlboro and Monte Carlo – were seized as well as 200 grams of tobacco, which was branded Amber Leaf and Cherry Choice.
In total, the products were worth €10,700 – a potential loss to the Exchequer of €9,100.
The car in which the cigarettes were found was also seized by officers.
A man in his 50s was questioned. A file is being prepared for the DPP.
