KOCHI: Following the incident wherein the jankar, Cochin Service IV, drifted into the shipping channel on Saturday morning, officials of the ports department conducted a resurvey of the vessel. The work on the vessel, including fixing of steering coupling and ramp, has been completed at the Sea Blue Ship Building Yard on Monday.
Although the department had conducted fresh surveys following the boat tragedy in August, passengers are dismayed by the fact that fitness certificates are no testimony for the true condition of the vessels. “What happened on Saturday is something that has taken place many times in the past. Passengers are apprehensive about travelling especially since the accident,” said Rajeev Gopal Komath of Vypeen Island Two and Four Wheelers Association.
The ports department maintains that both vessels are in good condition and that their surveys are conducted with due diligence.
