KARACHI: Gul Rehman, an officer of Pakistan Custom Service BS-19, who served the Directorate of Post Clearance Audit Karachi as its director for more than two and a half years, has added billion to rupees evaded duty and taxes during his tenure.
It is mentioned here that Federal Board of Revenue had posted Gul Rehman as Director PCA-Karachi in January 2015 and the officer broke all the records as hundreds of cases of tax evasions so far been detected involving evasion of duty and taxes worth billions of rupees.
While upholding its commitment to detect and highlight the tax evaders in the country, the Customs Directorate of Post Clearance Audit-Karachi under the leadership of its Director Gul Rehman detected hundreds of cases of evasion of duty/taxes.
“There are cases of misuse of fifth schedule Customs Act, 1969, sixth schedule for sales tax and clause 77-part-IV and second schedule of income tax on import of LEDs. The country of origin of the imports is China. Moreover, the evasion of short payment of custom duty and withholding income tax by claiming inadmissible benefits of SRO 1125(I)/2011 dated 31.12.2011 have also been detected.
In some cases, the importers also availed illegal benefits/exemption of Serial No 26 of Table-I of Sixth Schedule of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.
In year 2012-13, the directorate of PCA had detected only 15 cases of tax evasions worth Rs7.4 million, sources said, adding that a total of 105 cases were detected in the year 2013-14 with an evasion of Rs 40 million. However, with the extra ordinary efforts of the director, the directorate had detected more than 403 cases of tax and duty evasions worth more than Rs 1 billion in six months that never happened in the past.
In place of Director Gul Rehman, an officer of BS-19 Dr Muhammad Nadeem Memon has assumed the charge as Director PCA Karachi on Tuesday .
