ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken serious notice that Regional Tax Office Islamabad instead of recovering the amount of Rs15.367 million from four taxpayers put the recoverable amount into minus account and made its entry in arrears register.
According to the details, FBR directed the RTO to take corrective action as per law and fix responsibility against the officer responsible for lapse. During the scrutiny of tax record pertaining to Broadening of Tax Base (BTB) maintained by RTO Islamabad revealed that on the basis of information received from FBR (HQ), RTO Islamabad confronted four taxpayers Syed Aized Ali Abid, Jassim Hussain Azam, Mrs Rukhsana Yasmin and Tooba Waqas regarding filing of returns, and demanded explanation of the source of credited amount.
The demand of Rs15,367 million was created by the RTO after fulfilling all formalities. Later on the taxpayers requested for revision of order passed under section 122C. In all four cases, either the demand was upheld by rectifying officer or taxpayer deposited partial amount.
Contrary to above, the tax authorities instead of recovering the government dues put the recoverable amount into minus account and made its entry in the arrears register. The willful alteration of tax record without any cogent reasons resulted in loss of government revenue amounting to Rs15.367 million.
