ISLAMABAD: Directorate of intelligence & investigation FBR regional office, Rawalpindi received information through DG, I&I-FBR, Islamabad that a huge quantity of mobile phones would be attempted to smuggle through Islamabad airport via Emirates Flights Nos. EK-614 and Qatar Airways Flight No QR-630 on 26.04.2015. In pursuance of the Additional Directors I&I-FBR, Rawalpindi and Islamabad along with Deputy Collector Customs BBI Airport, Islamabad scanned both the flights. However, nothing was detected in the scanned baggage. In the meanwhile further information was received that contraband goods were dumped in the left over baggage by tearing apart the airline tags / stickers from the baggage to conceal its ownership. The left over baggage was then thoroughly searched that led to detection of seven un-claimed bags found beside Convener Belt No.01. At the time of occurrence no one claimed ownership of the detected 07-bags. These bags were then opened in the presence of Additional Director, I&I-FBR, Rawalpindi and Deputy Collector of Customs BBI Airport, Islamabad that led to recovery of huge quantity of foreign origin Mobile Phones.
The same were seized under Section 168 of the Customs Act, 1969. Notice under Section 171 of the Customs Act, 1969 was pasted on the notice board of Customs Hall BBI, Airport Islamabad addressed to the un-known persons. FIR has been lodged against un-known persons. Further investigation is underway. The market value of above said F/O smuggled non-duty paid mobile phones has been estimated around Rs 35-Million.
