DUBAI: Customs has presented its leading experience in intellectual property rights protection to the participants in the 8th International Law Enforcement IP Crime Conference, co-hosted by INTERPOL and Vietnam National Police in Hanoi, Vietnam.Some 500 delegates representingsenior law enforcement officials, security and industry experts from around the world attended the three-day conference under the theme of “Global Partnerships To Turn Back Crime”.
Addressing the conference, Yousef Ozair Mubarak, Director of IPR Department at Dubai Customs, said “Dubai Customs devotes great attention to preserving intellectual property rights. This stems from our commitmentto fully serve our role as a Customs administration in upholding trade and investment environment by combating piracy, counterfeit and commercial fraud. The ultimate goal is to ensure the rights of producers and creators, while also safeguarding the rights of consumers and guarding them against the dangers of fake goods.
Ozair further noted that DC implements latest anti-smuggling techniques to curb the illicit trade of counterfeit products. The in-house Risk Engine system is regularly fed withupdated information associated with the IP crime. Inspectors are also equipped with advanced skills and knowledge enabling them to detect counterfeit and fraudulent goods no matter how fine they were copied, such as through continued training courses and workshops that address the newest tricks and methods being used.
“Dubai Customs is also keen on establishing close partnership and coordinationwith all international bodies concerned with fighting criminal IPR infringements, particularly World Intellectual Property Organization and specialized entities in Customs authorities around the world,” said Ozair.
Locally, he added,the growing success Dubai Customs has attained in IPR protection also owes to effective partnerships with all concerned government entities via the unified government team which was instigated by DC with the endeavour of better aligning efforts amongst these agencies towards attaining the utmost efficiency possible, as well as through stronger partnerships with trademarks owners and their representatives who are engaged in Dubai Customs’ IPR activities.
The IPR Director at Dubai Customs further stated: “In line with our commitment to bringing in more participants in our anti-counterfeit ventures, we have partnered with all segments of the society to implant and nurture a public culture that respects intellectual property rights at a wider scale.”
