NEW DELHI: The Madurai police arrested nine people, including a sub-inspector from the customs department, for allegedly stealing 52kg of silver bars from a businessman in November. They recovered 30kg of silver bars from the accused.
The police are searching for three more people in connection with the case.
The robbery took place on November 24 when Salem-based businessman E Govindaraj and two others were returning home from Madurai after buying silver bars.
A gang intercepted the businessman’s car at Vadipatti. The gang members forced the three men to alight from the car and asked them to get into their vehicle. The victims thought that they were being taken to a police station. However, the gang dropped them at Malaipatti. Their car was also parked nearby.
