ISLAMABAD: Directorate-General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has detected a major racket involved in replacement of high value/restricted goods like mobile phones, LEDs, dish receivers with low value goods transshipment destined to Sambrial Dry Port.
Sources told Customs Today that Director-General Customs Intelligence and Investigation Shaukat Ali received credible information about replacement of goods. He directed to enhance vigilance on all transshipment routes. The process was started when one container imported at KICT, Karachi under transshipment to Sambrial Dry Port was intercepted, which was being unloaded illegally in Karachi. Mobile phones and LEDs were recovered from this container.
A couple of days later, another container stuffed with banned satellite receivers (14,440 worth Rs15.48 million) was identified at East Wharf, Karachi. The declaration on the shipping documents was broken computer parts. Another container was located at KICT, West Wharf, Karachi. Goods like used/refurbished CPUs, computer monitors, laptops, biometric machines, valuing at Rs15.48 million were recovered while declaration on shipping documents was again computer broken parts. An FIR has been lodged and further investigations into the scam are still in progress.
