DOHA: Customs authorities foiled 317 bids to smuggle drugs into the country last year, a senior customs official said yesterday.
According to him, almost every day at least one smuggling attempt is foiled and is investigated.
Ahmed Eisa Al Mohannadi, Deputy Chairman, Customs General Authority, said smuggling bids are foiled in collaboration with law-enforcement agencies.
“Our cooperation is close with the Anti-drug Trafficking Directorate,” Al Mohannadi said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs H E Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi opened an exhibition to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls on June 26.
The event at Villaggio continues until tomorrow.
Major-General Saad bin Jassem Al Khulaifi, Director-General, Public Security, jointly opened the event with the Minister. The expo aims to raise awareness against drug use. Al Mohannadi said all customs checkpoints have ultra-modern and sophisticated systems to foil drug smuggling bids.
