KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Hammal Baloch son of Muhammad Aslam Gohar Baloch and Fahad Ali son of Taj Muhammad to Central Jail on judicial remand, who were arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle fraudulent clearance of restricted betel nuts in the garb of mixed used clothes for processing at Karachi Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), Karachi.
It needs to be mentioned here that suspect Muhammad Akif son of Muhammad Arif is already on physical remand in this case.
On November 20, 2018, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that both suspects were arrested by customs team and prosecution needs further investigations from them, therefore, the court may send them on physical remand, however, after the hearing, the court sent them to jail and directed jail authorities to produce them on next date of hearing.
According to the first information report, owners/partners/directors of M/s Hands Industries Private Limited imported a consignment and declared it as 19000 kilogram mixed used clothes worth Rs840,787 and during the examination, customs team found 26985 kilograms betel nuts worth Rs4,986,828 and evaded the duties and taxes to the tune of Rs6,240,716.
Investigation officer had informed the court that during the investigation one above-mentioned suspect has been arrested and he is further required for investigation, therefore, the court may send back him to the customs department.
