KARACHI: The customs court extended physical remand of suspects Manzoor Ahmed and Riaz Ahmed, and sent them back to customs lock-up. They were nominated in a case of attempting to smuggle Samsung UDH TV sets and foreign origin fabric, etc.
On 30 October 2019, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on a credible information, customs officials intercepted Daewoo passenger bus Arbaz coach bearing registration number: LES-299 and found 72 rolls of gents suiting cloth AVENT brad, made in Taiwan, 3240 yards, weighing 936 kg, 42 ‘thans’ of assorted Velvet total 1890 yards 378 kgs, 80 rolls of J.S high quality polyester ladies cloth total 5600 yards 560 kgs. Total cloth 10,730 yards 1874 kgs value estimated at Rs 1,765,308. He further submitted that customs officials also found 04 Samsung UHD TV sets 123 CM model UA49 RU7100K (49”), 01 Samsung UHD TV set 123 CM model UA43 RU100K (43”) valuing of Rs227,650, 04 tyres COMPASAL made in China valuing of Rs 92,516, 25 pairs of assorted brand sports shoes made in China valuing of Rs 11,775 and other goods.
He further stated that prosecution needs further investigation and arrest of other culprits, therefore, court may grant their physical remand. After the hearing, court extended their remand and sent them back to customs department, and court also directed investigation officer to produce them before the court on next date of hearing along with progress report. According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
