KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect Ghulam Muhammad son of Muhammad Usman to Central Jail on judicial remand, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle spare parts, betel nuts, foreign origin cloth etc.
On 31 December 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced him before the court and informed that on actionable information, customs officials intercepted a Hino passenger bus bearing registration number: BSB-747 and during the search found betel nuts, engine crankshaft, Red Bull energy drink, spare parts, foreign origin cloth, foreign origin blankets etc.
He further submitted that after the search, the driver was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, he was arrested and goods were seized by customs officials.
He argued that suspect is involved in smuggling of goods amounting to Rs7,893,000, prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of other culprits, therefore, court may approve his physical remand.
After the hearing, court sent him to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet on next date of hearing.
According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of imports & export control act, 1950.
