KARACHI: The customs court approved physical remand of suspect namely Shafiq son of Saeed ur Rehman, who was nominated in first information report (FIR) in smuggling of 16,130 kg foreign origin betel nuts worth Rs14,850,000 tentative.
On 15 September 2020, investigation officer of Collectorate of Customs Enforcement and Compliance submitted first information report and also produces above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on information, customs officials intercepted a Hino trailer bearing registration number TLY-369 (Lasbela).
He further informed the court that during the search, customs officials found 559 pp bags while color containing foreign origin betel nuts each weighing 16,130 kg, worth Rs14,850,000 tentative.
He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of financiers, perpetrators, abettors & others including owner of the goods, therefore, court may send them back to customs department, after the hearing, court approved their physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the first information report, case was registered for violation of under section 168 of the customs act, 1969, in violation of section 2(s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of the customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses (89) of section 156 (1) read with 3 of import and export control act, 1950.
