KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Abdul Wali son of Amir Muhammad and sent to him back to customs lock-up, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts etc.
On 4 February 2020, investigation officer ASO produced the above mentioned suspect and informed that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted one unit Hino truck trailer bearing registration no: TLT-569 and recovered 400 pp bags of betel nuts each containing 25 kilograms, total 10,000 kilograms worth Rs8,000,000.
He said that during the checking, suspect was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, suspect was taken into custody and goods along with vehicle.
He stated that prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of other financer/ abettors/ associates, therefore, court may send him back to customs lock-up.
After the hearing, court approved his physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A, 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
