KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects Samiullah son of Muhammad Ishaq, Ziaduddin son of Roziuddin and Najeed Ullah son of Muhammad Yousaf to Central Jail on judicial remand, who were arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 3560 kilograms betel nuts valuing Rs707,728.
On April 30, 2019, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that customs officials intercepted one Hino mini truck bearing registration no: MNO-7288 model 1990 and recovered 106 bags assorted size and weight containing total 3560 kgs foreign origin betel nuts valuing Rs707,728.
He submitted that during the search, suspects failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods along with truck were seized and suspects were also arrested by customs team.
He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation from them therefore, court may send back to customs department on physical remand, however, after the hearing, court sent suspect to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet on next date of hearing, court also directed jail authorities to produce them on next date of hearing.
According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 156(2) 157(2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (8) (89) of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (i) of Imports and Export Control Act, 1950.
