KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Niaz Muhammad Brohi and Muhammad Hanzala to customs department on physical remand arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 13,600 kg betel nuts smuggling case.
On June 18, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced them before the trail court and informed that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted a Hino dumper bearing registration number:TAB-628 (Lasbela) near at Hamdard University Choke Point, Northern Bypass, Karachi on June 17, 2019 and recovered 170 gunny bags each containing 80 kilograms foreign origin betel nuts total 13,600 kilograms worth Rs6,800,000 which were dumped under the cover load of crushed stones.
He submitted that prosecution needs further physical remand for arrest of financiers, abettors & others including owner of impugned goods, therefore, court may send them back on physical remand.
After the hearing court remanded them back and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered at the office of Anti-Smuggling Organization HQ NMB Wharf, Karachi for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
