KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Abdul Samad son of Shahzad Khan and sent him to customs lock –up, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non duty paid foreign origin betel nuts.
On 29 June 2020, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspect before the court along with first information report (FIR) and informed the court that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted a used Nissan truck bearing registration number no C-3077 chassis no PKD311H-02669-P approximately valuing of Rs4,000,000 and during the search, customs officials recovers 300 PP bags of assorted weight containing foreign origin betel nuts , total 9,500 kg valuing of Rs9,500,000.
He further submitted that after the formalities, first information report (FIR) has been lodged and abovementioned suspect was taken into customs custody, he said that prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of other culprits, who are allegedly involved in this crime, therefore, court may grant his physical remand for 14 days.
After the hearing, court approved his physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A ,22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
