CAPE TOWN: The Penang High Court sentenced a South African to death for trafficking in drugs.
Deon Jacobus Alfred Cornelius, a 28-year-old security guard from South Africa, was sent to the gallows after he was found guilty of bringing into Penang 1,949 grammes of methamphetamine two years ago.
Cornelius committed the offence at the Penang International Airport’s customs inspection counter at around 11.40am on October 4, 2013.
The drugs were found in a hidden compartment of his laptop bag.
Judicial Commissioner Nordin Hassan ruled the prosecution had succeeded in proving a case beyond reasonable doubt.
DPP Zuraidah Zakaria prosecuted the case while counsel Hussaini Abdul Rashid represented the accused.
The offence carries the mandatory death sentence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
