KUALA LUMPUR: The Customs Department here detained a man and his wife for suspected drug trafficking after they were found with about 99kg of marijuana (ganja) and 0.3g of heroin worth about RM148,650 in their possession.
State Customs Department director Kamarudin Jaafar said the couple, both 35-years-old, from Kedah, were detained on December 27 at around 4.15pm while they were riding in a car with a Malaysian registration number in Wang Kelian.
“A total of 69 large packets of marijuana were found in the boot of the suspects’ car, another 30 large packets were found at the back seat, and three small packets in a bag and the suspect’s shirt pocket. “We believe the suspects, who also tested positive for drugs, had just returned after spending a few days in Thailand.
“The large amount of marijuana may be intended to be marketed around the nearby areas with the help of a syndicate, while those in the smaller packets may be for their personal use,” said Kamarudin.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty. “Both the suspects were remanded for 15 days beginning December 28 for further investigation,” said Kamarudin.
