CHENNAI: Chennai Metro Water has collected Rs 3.3 million pending water and sewerage tax from defaulters during a special drive launched in Koyambedu and Mannady areas.
“The drive to collect water and sewerage tax which is part of property tax at 7 per cent per annum of the annual value fixed by the Corporation of Chennai was launched on Friday,” a Chennai Metro water spokesman said.
The water and sewerage tax is a component of property tax and a statutory levy payable irrespective of any services availed by the consumers, he said.
“We launched the drive on shops carrying out vegetable and flower business in the Koyambedu market. A total of 120 shop owners paid a sum of Rs.11.12 lakh. Another special campaign will be arranged within the next 15 days for those who have not yet paid water and sewerage tax and this facility can be utilized by the commercial Shop owners of the Koyambedu market,” the spokesman said.
Similarly, a special drive was launched against commercial shops located in Rajaji Salai and Mannady that failed to pay the tax. The campaign yielded in realizing arrears worth Rs 22 lakh.
