KARACHI: The new Board of Trustees for Karachi Port Trust has been approved by the Prime Minister’s office. The board was ineffective and important matters were pending since KPT’s board meetings had not been held since the last six months. PM’s office has forwarded a notification to the Ministry of Ports and Shipping in this regard.
According to the notification, Vice Admiral Shafqat Jawed will be Chairman KPT. Members of the board are Nasir-ud-Din Mehmood, Javaid Ashraf, Hussain Saleem, Collector Customs- Preventive, Karachi and Commander Karachi Pakistan Navy. A representative each from Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Karachi Cotton Exchange, Pakistan Ship-Owners Association and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
The KCCI has nominated Dr Qazi Ahmed Kamal as trustee for the KPT up to December 31, 2015.
It is expected that the Ministry of Ports and Shipping would issue its notification within a week.
The appointment of the board of directors is important and it is mandatory for the board, as per the ports law, to meet twice in a month to resolve, tackle, discuss and take decisions regarding routine matters.
Additionally, the board is also supposed to take important decisions regarding issuance of tenders, port operations, projects, allotments, etc.
