KARACHI: The Customs Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO) in a joint action with the officers of Collectorate Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Port Qasim has confiscated an oil tanker filled with Iranian diesel.
According to details, a team headed by the Deputy Collector Ali Raza Turrabi on a tip-off increased the surveillance at Port Qasim check post near National Highway.
The ASO officials were also informed that some unscrupulous elements were attempting to smuggle Iranian diesel/petrol from interior Sindh to Karachi via National Highway.
Subsequently, the customs authorities beefed up the security at Port Qasim check post and signalled an oil tanker on suspicion to stop; however; the driver of the oil tanker speeded up the vehicle rather to stop.
Reacting upon the situation, the customs staff chased the oil tanker, but the driver of the oil tanker fled from the scene, but the oil tanker was confiscated. Deputy Collector Ali Raza Turrabi informed this scribe that 24,000 litres of Iranian diesel was recovered from the tanker, adding that the cost of confiscated diesel is in millions of rupees.
It is pertinent to mention here that the ASO during its ongoing operation for last several months have confiscated Iranian diesel worth millions of rupees from different check posts.
