BUENOS AIRES: Four auxiliary transport ships that the Argentine Ministry of Defence (MoD) purchased from Russia through an agreement in late 2014 arrived at the Buenos Aires Naval Station on 5 December.
The four maritime transport vessels (classified as ice class L1 by Russia) cost USD8.2 million, according to the MoD.
The ships were built around 1990, are about 81.37 m long, beam of 15.98 m, displace 1.4 tons, and draw 4.9 m. They sailed on 20 October from Russian ports Murmansk and Archangel, each with a mixed crew of 30 Argentinians and Russians.
Two of the ships are to serve at Ushuaia’s navy base, another at Puerto Belgrano’s base, and the last one at Mar del Plata’s.
