AMMAN: The Public Security Department said that Customs police foiled a bid to smuggle three million drug pills in Aqaba governorate, 330 kilometers south of the capital.
The statement said that two suspect vehicles were placed under surveillance, and a patrol managed to stop the first vehicle and overpowered its occupant, who was an Arab national. The second vehicle’s driver, who instead of stopping, fled at high speed and tried to escape towards a rugged terrain, ended up colliding with a fence and damaging the vehicle. The driver then jumped out and began shooting at the police party chasing him.
Officers managed to overpower the shooter who was injured in the foot. He was later identified as an Arab national who was already wanted in several criminal cases, the statement added. A Jordanian, who accompanied the driver in the damaged vehicle, was killed in the accident. A search of the vehicle by the sleuths led to the discovery of an AK74 rifle, massive quantities of narcotic pills and hashish stuffed inside concealed cavities in the car.
