ALGIERS: Car import bill went down by 40.3% in 2015 compared to 2014, said Monday Minister of Industry and Mining Abdesselam Bouchouarebat El Moudjahidforum in Algiers.
In 2014, car import bill totalled US$6.34 billion for 439,637 cars, against US$3.781 billion in 2015, down by 40.3% in terms of value, and -32% in terms of quantity.
This decline in car imports resulted from the implementation of the new terms and conditions for car dealers, explained the minister. Negotiations with the car manufacturers Peugeot, Fiat, IvecoandHyundaitrucks for the creation of production plants in Algeria “are progressing well,” he said.
“We are also in discussions with an Iranian partner,” he announced, adding that “Nissan expressed hope to invest in Algeria.” As regards the German car manufacturer Volkswagen, Bouchouareb underlined that “all indications show that they have decided, after a period of hesitation, to open an assembly plant in Algeria.”
