CAPE MAY: The crew of the Dependable recovered $800,000 in cocaine from a ship. it rescued 42 migrants stowed in overloaded vessels.
US Coast Guard cutter is due back in Cape May after an eventful 60 day tour.
The Dependable was tipped off about the drugs after after a U.S. Customs and Border Protection plane spotted a ship without navigation lights, the report said. When the Dependable neared the boat, smugglers began tossing packages overboard.
About 71 pounds of drugs were found after the Coast Guard cutter fired warning shots to stop the drug-filled ship, the report said.
The migrants were rescued in the Caribbean Sea. The Coast Guard said it treated another 200 people and then returned to what the report termed “their country of origin.”
