JAKARTA: Indonesia’s drug enforcement agency has destroyed more than 860 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, which authorities say is the biggest drug haul in the country’s history.
The country’s national narcotics agency, BNN, paraded nine men at a waste incineration plant at Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta airport.
They were accused of smuggling drugs allegedly hidden inside coffee bags.
BNN’s head of drug eradication said the 862-kilogram haul was worth about $200,000 per kilo – $170 million in total.
A man from Hong Kong accused of being the kingpin allegedly operated across Asia for years.
Bags of the drug were thrown into the incinerator and destroyed.
BNN spokesman Deddy Fauzi Elhakim said anyone caught with more than five grams of the drug was eligible for the death penalty.
